The Power of Breathwork

A woman in a pink outfit stands on a wooden deck, smiling and looking out at lush green tropical forest as she takes a deep breath.

Healing From Within

Have you ever noticed yourself holding your breath while sitting in traffic, folding laundry or under any kind of daily stress? We all do it and rarely notice, because breathing is something we don’t usually think about.

For centuries, the breath has been the backbone of spiritual awakening, healing, movement, and ritual. Cultures across the world understand that consciously altering breathing patterns can regulate emotions, relieve tension, and increase vitality.

When you are under stress or feel anxiety, your breath becomes shallow. Often you  stop breathing for a short moment without even noticing. But your body notices, and interprets this shorter breath as a sign that something is wrong. Here is where the fight-flight-freeze response can become activated.

This is your body’s natural stress response. When your brain perceives danger, it quickly releases adrenaline and cortisol, increasing your heart rate and breathing while preparing your body to fight, flee, or freeze to protect itself. Although essential in true emergencies, this response can also be triggered by everyday stress, leaving the body feeling tense, anxious, and overwhelmed.

Given the daily stress of our modern life, a vast number of women are embracing breathwork as a natural and powerful way to regulate their nervous system and manage the daily stressors of life. When you intentionally slow and deepen your breathing, you send your nervous system a different message that says, you are safe, you can relax.

You Already Have A Free Tool Available – Your Breath

The beauty of breathwork is that you do not need to become an expert or spend an hour meditating every day. You are already breathing all day long.

The difference is learning to do it with awareness and intention.

Notice your breath right now. Is it high in your chest? Are your shoulders up near your ears, maybe a bit of tightness in your jaw? Are you slouched at your computer? This posture can actually compress the diaphragm making your breath shallow.

Here are some easy-to-follow breathing practices you can do just about anywhere and at any time. Don’t worry, it’s not another thing to add to your to-do list. Think of it as cultivating a new healthy habit of simply being aware.

Over time, this awareness and small changes in your breath can have a surprising effect on how you feel. After a week of paying attention to your breath, you may notice yourself sitting up straighter, feeling more relaxed, and becoming more present throughout the day.

Here Are Five Simple Breathwork Practices To Explore

Conscious Connected Breathing: If You’re Feeling Overwhelmed Or Stuck In Your Head

Many of us spend most of the day in our heads. There is always something to remember, plan, or worry about. Family responsibilities, notifications, and work demands can all contribute to feelings of mental exhaustion.

Conscious connected breathing can be especially helpful during these times. The breath flows continuously, allowing the inhale to connect with the exhale in a smooth, natural rhythm.

This type of breathing often helps interrupt mental loops and encourages your mind and body to settle, especially when you are feeling emotionally overwhelmed.

The 4-7-8 Breath: When You’re Thinking Instead Of Sleeping

You are exhausted, but your mind refuses to cooperate. If you find yourself replaying the day or planning tomorrow’s schedule, this is a wonderful practice to try.

The 4-7-8 breath is recommended for this exact situation because it places extra attention on the exhale. Inhale through the nose for 4 seconds, hold the breath for 7 seconds, and exhale completely through the mouth for 8 seconds. These longer exhalations naturally encourage the body to move into a more relaxed state.

This practice may help slow racing thoughts, reduce physical tension, and make it easier to fall asleep.

Box Breathing: If You Feel Scattered And Need To Refocus

Some days are super busy, chaotic, and your attention is being pulled in every direction. This is when Box Breath comes in handy. Because each part of the breath follows the same rhythm, inhale, pause, exhale, and pause, you naturally begin to alleviate feelings of overwhelm.

The steady rhythm can feel grounding and give your mind something to focus on.

This can be useful before an important meeting, a difficult conversation, or anytime you feel emotionally reactive. Think of it as a quick reset button when you need a moment to regroup.

Alternate Nostril Breathing: When You’re Mentally Drained Or Disconnected

A green plant is blurred in the foreground.Modern life asks us to process an enormous amount of information every day. Decisions, responsibilities, messages, and endless scrolling can leave you feeling mentally foggy and disconnected.

Alternate Nostril Breathing has been practiced for centuries as a way to create balance between body and mind. Because the breath naturally slows during this practice, you will notice that your thoughts begin to settle, and a sense of peace often follows.

This can be a beautiful practice before journaling, meditation, prayer, or anytime you need a few quiet minutes to step away from the noise and reconnect with yourself.

Three-Part Breath: For Accumulated Stress

Stress can get stored in your body. It can build up daily and show up in shallow breathing, mental fog, lethargy, sadness and even headaches.Three-Part breathing encourages expansion through the belly, rib cage, and chest. It invites the body to take up more space and breathe more fully.

Gaia Goddess CEO and founder Maria Marshall is a breathwork practitioner and integrative energy healer who has incorporated Three-Part Breath into her own life for more than fifteen years.

This is a more intentional type of breathwork but its effects can be profound. Maria credits her long-term Three-Part breathing practice as an important part of her own emotional healing and spiritual growth.

Women who attend her breath workshops often describe feelings of lightness, tingling, emotional release, and a deeper sense of connection with themselves.

Holotropic Breathwork: When You Feel The Need For Deep Emotional Healing

Holotropic breathwork should be done with a trained facilitator, as it requires deep breathing done in a rapid continuous rhythm along with music.

Many women experiencing unresolved trauma, grief or chronic stress can greatly benefit from this practice.  It helps release stored emotions, reduce stress and anxiety,  and promote emotional and spiritual healing.

You Don’t Have To Do It Perfectly

Breathwork is about remembering that you already have a tool within you to help restore balance to your nervous system.

When you begin to feel worried, stressed, anxious, or disconnected, take a moment and use that wise tool within, the breath of life, to find your calm. A few intentional breaths may not change your entire life in one afternoon, but they can change how you feel in the moment.

If one of these practices speaks to you, start there. Try it for a few minutes and see how you feel. Make it a daily habit and over time you will feel calmer, sleep better, and become more present and connected to yourself.
