Witnessing Grief: How to Hold Space with Compassion and Presence

In this compassionate Learning with Gaia conversation, Dr. Judith Ehrman Shapiro explores what it means to witness grief with empathy, curiosity, and kindness. Drawing from her extensive research on grief, her experience as an end-of-life doula, and her work supporting individuals through loss, Dr. Judith offers practical guidance for navigating one of life’s most tender human experiences.

Whether you are supporting a grieving friend, family member, partner, colleague, or community member, this conversation offers practical tools to help you show up with authenticity, compassion, and care.

The Gift of Creating Space

Rather than focusing on fixing grief, Dr. Judith explains how to create space for another person’s experience. Through reflective listening, thoughtful questions, and compassionate presence, we can learn how to support loved ones while honoring the unique path each person travels through mourning.

Dr. Judith reminds us that grief is not linear. There is no perfect roadmap, timeline, or sequence of emotions. Instead, grief moves in waves, bringing sadness, anger, confusion, acceptance, gratitude, or even moments of joy.

By releasing assumptions and embracing curiosity, we become better companions for those navigating loss, as we care for our own emotional wellbeing.

Key Insights for Supporting Someone in Grief

Learning to witness grief with compassion can strengthen relationships and deepen emotional resilience. Dr. Judith shares a few practical insights from her years of experience as an end-of-life doula, and her work supporting individuals through loss.

  • Ask Questions with Curiosity: Rather than assuming how someone feels, gently invite them to share their experience. Open-ended questions create space for understanding and connection.
  • Practice Reflective Listening: Listen fully before responding. Reflect back what you hear and allow the grieving person to clarify their experience in their own words.
  • Allow Silence: Grief often creates brain fog, emotional overwhelm, and difficulty finding words. Silence is not something to fix—it can be a gift.
  • Release Expectations: There is no “right way” to grieve. People move through loss differently, and emotions may change from moment to moment.
  • Simply Show Up: One of Dr. Judith’s most powerful reminders is that presence matters more than perfection.

“It’s okay to just say, ‘I’m here.”

Often, the most healing thing we can offer is our willingness to remain present without needing to solve the pain.
