Qigong for Grief Healing: Movement as Medicine to Release, Restore & Heal

Grief lives not only in the heart, but in the body. Through mindful movement, conscious breathing, and compassionate presence, we can begin to soften emotional tension, restore balance, and reconnect with our inner strength.

In this deeply restorative Qigong practice, Dr. Judith Ehrman-Shapiro guides you through a gentle movement sequence specifically designed to support the grieving process. Drawing from the ancient wisdom of Qigong, the Eight Brocades (Ba Duan Jin), Shibashi (18 Forms), and the embodiment principles of Chen (rooting to rise) and Song (relaxed stability), this practice offers a safe, nurturing space to acknowledge emotions, cultivate resilience, and gently move toward healing.

Beginning in the grounding posture of Wu Ji, Dr. Judith reminds us that some days, simply breathing is enough. Throughout the sequence, you’ll be invited to honor every emotion that arises—sadness, uncertainty, gratitude, joy, frustration, or peace—without judgment. Rather than pushing grief away, this practice encourages you to move with it, allowing the body to release what no longer serves while cultivating a sense of stability and hope.

The flowing movements—including Nourishing the Qi, Opening the Chest, Separating the Clouds, Lifting the Ball, Looking at the Moon, Twisting at the Waist, Cloud Hands, Tiger Shredding, Turning the Flying Wheel, and Hiding Flower Under Leaf—support healthy breathing, emotional expression, nervous system regulation, and connection to the natural cycles of life. Together, they create a gentle pathway toward integration, reminding us that healing is not about forgetting—it is about learning to carry loss with compassion and grace.

Whether you are grieving the loss of a loved one, navigating a life transition, or carrying the weight of emotional stress, this practice offers a compassionate invitation to reconnect with your body, your breath, and your innate capacity for healing.
