Learn Breath of Fire, also known as Kapalabhati Pranayama or Skull Shining Breath, with certified yoga and Pilates instructor Amanda Kramer. This guided yogic breathing practice introduces the technique step by step, beginning with slow, controlled abdominal contractions before gradually building into a rhythmic breathing pattern. You’ll learn how the active exhalation and passive inhalation work together, using the abdominal muscles while maintaining a tall, relaxed posture. Traditionally used in yoga and pranayama practices to cultivate focus, energy, and awareness, Breath of Fire can be incorporated before meditation, yoga, or whenever you want to create a more energized and concentrated state. Amanda explains the role of the diaphragm, lungs, abdomen, and breath while guiding you through progressively longer rounds so you can become familiar with the rhythm at your own pace.

What Is Breath of Fire?

Breath of Fire, commonly known as Kapalabhati, is a yogic breathing technique characterized by active, forceful exhalations followed by passive inhalations. Amanda guides you through the mechanics of the practice, emphasizing abdominal contraction during each exhale and relaxation of the belly as the inhale naturally returns. The practice is traditionally associated with moving prana, or life force, while the name “Skull Shining Breath” reflects its traditional yogic association with cleansing and clarity. This beginner-friendly tutorial allows you to learn the technique gradually before increasing the pace and number of repetitions.

Benefits of Kapalabhati Breathing

Kapalabhati breathing can be incorporated into a yoga or meditation routine as a practice for cultivating focus, breath awareness, and energy. The rhythmic abdominal contractions engage the core while the structured breathing pattern gives the mind something active to concentrate on. In this guided session, Amanda demonstrates several rounds of Breath of Fire, gradually increasing the repetitions and pace before returning to a natural breathing rhythm and observing the sensations throughout the body.
